Singer Raageshwari tells that people with hearing disabilities need to be given equal oppurtunites in life
There is lots that India can do when it comes to doing something to make life better for the human condition. As a child, I grew up in a musical atmosphere, listening to Beethovan’s symphonies. But not many people know that Beethovan, who made such beautiful music, was actually deaf. His is such an inspiring story. I realised that people who are deaf or blind, can actually hear much more or see so much more than others.
I was in Delhi before I moved to Mumbai and I had a friend there called Rachna who was deaf. Only her immediate family had learnt sign language. When I came into her life, even I learnt sign language in order to communicate with her. Even if an average intelligent person spends ten minutes trying to learn the sign language, he can learn it. It looks tough but it really is that simple and you can always keep practising. After I moved to Mumbai, I made more friends who were deaf and I could communicate with them better.
It was only after I went for a trip to America that I realised that over there, people with disabilities are made to feel valued. Unlike America, there are no facilities in India for the disabled. How is a deaf person supposed to make a call at the time of an emergency? Over there, if a deaf person wants to use the telephone, he can use a TDD which is a telephone with a typing device. If a deaf couple in India has a baby, how will they know when their baby starts crying? In the West, there are special bulbs that light up when a baby cries or when the doorbell has been rung.
There is so much that needs to be done in our country for people with disabilities. It is so important to have news channels which run subtitles with the news. There should be special schools and colleges to teach such people. I have a lot of deaf friends who’re just like us — they sms, are brilliant with artwork, are wellread — only because they have received proper education in America.
Deaf people are bright and they exude such positive energy. I’m involved with a cause that hopes to create awareness among people about deafness and to explain to them how they too, can help in this cause. Our city Mumbai has suffered so much in the past few days. We need to ask ourselves why we need a crisis everytime to remind us to come together. We need to make it a way of life and provide equal opportunities for everyone in this country.

The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations. - David Friedman

we should learn sign language just in case, although we probably would see someone struggling
